The Makers · №03

Chen Yongxin has been folding steel in the same forge for thirty-one years.

His father taught him, and his father's father before that. The Chen family has been forging swords in Longquan since 1876. Every blade we sell is folded eight times, oil-quenched once, and signed with the character 陳 near the tang.

We visit twice a year. We've seen the quenching barrel. We've held blades that were not quite right, and watched them go back into the fire. This is what "hand-forged" means to us: someone we can name.
